On October 11th Benjamin Moore announced Blue Nova 825 as the Color Of The Year 2024. Thanks to a violet undertone this mid-tone blue can appear slightly purple. With an LRV (Light Reflective Value) or 16.98 Blue Nova is dark enough to give it a beautiful depth but not so dark that it looks navy and feels heavy. Where can you use Blue Nova? It's a great choice for adding a pop of color on a bathroom vanity - especially if you have a lot of white tile. Use it on a island to add color to your kitchen As an accent in the living room. Pair with soft fabrics in creamy whites, accessories in warm pumpkin (orange + blue made a wonderful pair). Create a cozy bedroom by painting all the walls AND woodwork in Blue Nova. Create a relaxing space by minimizing contrast and layering with other shades of blue. Furniture and built ins. Adding a fun color like Blue Nova in a neutral space is a great way to add visual interest. What are some great colors to pair with Blue Nova for woodwork or adjoining spaces? If you want to create a dramatic space try it on both walls AND woodwork in bedrooms, a home office, breakfast nook or cozy corner. For visual interest vary the sheen - for example Blue Nova in matte on walls and satin on the trim. Pair with another color from the 2024 Color Trends collection - Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17. This soft white will warm up the cool tones of Blue Nova. For adjoining rooms try a warm neutral like Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-25 (an off-white with warm grey undertone) or Stonington Gray HC-172 (a warm greige). Try an accent in soft pumpkin/terra cotta tones like Benjamin Moore Topaz 070 or Orange Blossom 2168-30. Can you use Blue Nova outside? YES. It would be a lovely choice from a front door, planters or accent furniture. However, from a technical perspective I would not recommend it on exterior walls or siding. Blue Nova has a large amount of magenta colorant which is greatly affected by UV light and cleaning agents like bleach. You will find that on areas where Blue Nova is exposed to long periods of direct sun it will fade much faster than other shades of blue. If you use bleach to clean any exterior surfaces, the run off may permanently discolor paint colors with a lot of magenta tint like this one.
